Exposing
the Myths in Today's Cuba: The
Children of the Revolution Speak Out for the
First Time
Dear
Colleague:
Following
the well-attended screening of the first of
our Summer Documentaries
"Covering
Cuba: The New Generation", I strongly
urge you to come and view the second film
"Hechos en Cuba: Ninos del Paraiso/Made
in Cuba: Children of Paradise" on
Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Rayburn
House Office Building, Room 2200, Capitol
Hill. There will be a reception at 6pm,
followed by the screening at 6:30pm.
This
new documentary includes revealing insights
by Fidel Castro's daughter, Alina, as well
as other children of the hierarchy. It also
depicts in shocking detail the experiences
of children growing up in Cuba today who are
routinely forced into prostitution and child
labor.
It
is the first documentary made about the
violations of the basic human rights of
children in Cuba. The Children of Paradise,
the New Generation of men and women of the
Cuban Revolution, describe their tragic
daily reality on camera - on an island where
the State is all powerful and freedom is not
part of the Master Plan. Children grow up as
"second class citizens" in an
apartheid system where foreigners get
preferential status and
government-sanctioned harassment of the
children of dissidents is a regular
occurrence.
In
addition, the film recalls the horrors of
the Cuban Coast Guard's sinking of a tugboat
with Cubans fleeing the island on July 13,
1994, killing 41 people, including 12
children.
I
hope you will be able to join me for the
screening of this important documentary.
Sincerely,
Ileana
Ros-Lehtinen
Member of Congress
